A DENTIST PROVIDES ROOT CANAL TREATMENT FOR INFECTED TEETH

Dr. Naveen Chennupati has extended and advanced education in the field of endodontic therapy, also known as “root canals.” He has performed thousands of root canal treatments for patients over the years, ensuring patients maintain their natural teeth whenever possible and avoid possible extraction. Root canal therapy is often a highly feared procedure, but it doesn’t have to be! In fact, root canal treatment usually resolves pain and discomfort, not cause it.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING ROOT CANAL THERAPY?

Root canal therapy is performed as an alternative to the permanent extraction of an adult tooth. A tooth that has become infected, affected by an abscess, or experienced significant decay or damage may require root canal therapy to keep the tooth in the smile. During the procedure, the dentist will create an access point into the inner canals of the tooth. The infected portion of the tooth is removed, and the dental pulp and the inner canals are disinfected to treat any bacteria present. The tooth is then sealed using gutta-percha and composite resin, and the dentist may also choose to place a dental crown over the tooth to strengthen and protect it.

WHY DO I NEED ROOT CANAL THERAPY?

Without endodontic treatment, patients will be faced with permanent removal and extraction of the tooth. Then, time and money are spent restoring the smile after tooth loss, often with partial dentures, dental bridges, or even dental implants. Regardless, maintaining the natural tooth is often the most desirable option. Dr. Chennupati may recommend root canal therapy to patients with:

  • An abscess
  • Significant damage/trauma to the tooth
  • An infection
  • An extensive cavity
  • A severe toothache

During an evaluation, the dentist will recommend the best course of treatment for a patient’s unique situation.
